Taking on the U.S. Senate
Rebecca Latimer Felton becomes the first woman United States senator, when the 87 year old is appointed to fill the seat vacated by the death of Thomas Watson, a senator from Georgia. She serves for just one day, until Walter F. George, who wins the seat in a special election, is sworn in on the 22nd. The first woman to be elected to the senate is Hattie Caraway of Arkansas, in 1930.
